Weekend Winners and Losers

WINNERS

· Big 12: Wins the SEC/Big 12 challenge 6-4. After losing the challenge last year, a win is a win.

· Braxton Beverly: Picked a great time to hit his only 3 of the game, nailing the buzzer beater in NC State’s crazy comeback win.

· Kentucky’s Bigs: Reid Travis (18 pts, 12 reb) and P.J. Washington (20 pts, 13 reb) exposed Kansas’s thin interior without Udoka Azubuike and completely controlled the game in the Cat’s 8 point win.

· Justin Robinson: Career high 35 pts on 9 made 3’s plus 8 ast for the senior. Oh, and he became VT’s all time assists leader in their dismantling of Syracuse.

· Purdue: Despite a below average game from Carsen Edwards Purdue got a huge resume boost at home taking down Michigan State.

· Lindell Wiggington and Iowa State: Welcome back Lindell Wiggington, the sophomore dropped 18 pts on 7-10 shooting in the Cyclones road win at Ole Miss. Wiggington finally appears to be returning to form, and Iowa State is looking ever more dangerous.

· Mississippi St.: Stays afloat at .500 in SEC play with a big home win against Auburn.

· UCLA: Dominated Arizona at Pauley Pavilion behind a career high 34 pts from Kris Wilkes. This team is capable of winning the PAC 12 tournament and stealing a bid.

· Tennessee’s Guards: 23 pts on 8-10 shooting from Lamonte Turner, 15 pts from Jordan Bowden, and 9 pts, 5 reb, and 5 ast for Jordan Bone paced Tennessee to a 17 point win over West Virginia.

· Ethan Happ: The Wisconsin Center furthered his Big Ten player of the year campaign with a 13 pts, 12 reb, 11 ast triple double in the Badger’s win over Northwestern.

LOSERS

· Brad Brownell: The Clemson coach elected to foul up 3 with 9 seconds left, opening the door for NC State’s buzzer beater.

· Old Dominion: Led UTSA by 17 with 3:44 remaining on the road. Lost by 1 in regulation. Not. Good.

· Shaka Smart’s hot seat: Clunker of a performance by the Longhorns in Athens. Sloppy defense and ballhandling led to a potential resume crushing loss. The pressure is mounting for Shaka.

· Iowa: Followed up a home loss to Michigan State with a 5 point loss at Minnesota, in which they gave up 92 points.

· Maryland: Lost to Illinois by double digits (at MSG for some reason). Enough said.

· LaGerald Vick’s second half: Kansas’s second leading scored took the Jayhawks’ opening shot of the second half, and then didn’t shoot again until the final minute as Kansas struggled offensively at Rupp. Getting locked up by Tyler Herro is not a good look.

· Missouri: Mizzou led SEC undefeated LSU by 14 with 2:14 remaining and saw that lead turn into an overtime loss.

· St. John’s: Dropped a home game to Mac McClung and Georgetown. Good luck figuring this team out.

· Michigan State’s 3 point shooting: Cassius Winston shot 4-7 in the loss at Purdue, but the rest of the team combined to shoot 5-19 including 2-7 from Matt McQuaid.

· Indiana’s Start: The Hoosiers spotted Michigan a 17-0 lead Friday at Assembly Hall before closing the half on an 18-16 run! The Hoosiers lost by 23.
